On paper, 2025’s “Playdate” is a perfect formula for a “buddy comedy” that should be a huge hit. Kevin James, who has won the hearts of family audiences with roles like ‘King of Queens’ and ‘Paul Blart’, is a smart choice to pair with “Reacher,” aka Alan Ritchson, one of the most gruesome, massive characters in modern action cinema. However, the film, which was released on November 12 on Prime Video, has become the biggest “disappointment” of 2025, being severely rejected by critics.
Directed by Luke Greenfield (‘Let’s Be Cops’), this ‘action-comedy’ film is built on a very simple but attractive story concept. According to the IMDb synopsis, “Brian (Kevin James) loses his job. He becomes a ‘stay-at-home dad’. He accepts an invitation from another ‘stay-at-home dad’ to go on a ‘playdate’ with his kids. But the other dad (Alan Richson) turns out to be a ‘loose cannon’.”
This “clash of worlds” – a normal, gentle father and a fierce, mysterious, action-hero-like father – should have made for an hour and a half (1h 33m) of non-stop laughter.
However, the film’s reception has been extremely disappointing. The film has been roundly panned by critics, with an average rating of 5.5/10 from 4,400 votes on IMDb and a Metascore of 20 (“Overwhelming Dislike”). The film’s critical reception is largely due to its reliance on the “persona clash” of its two leads, and its failure to provide a coherent, intelligent screenplay (by Neil Goldman and Kevin James themselves).
The PG-13 rating keeps the film’s ‘Action’ and ‘Comedy’ elements “safe” and “predictable,” with no edginess or risk. It lacks the grittiness of ‘Reacher’ or the sensitive humor of ‘King of Queens.
However, the high ranking of 190th on the popularity index proves the “click-bait” value of the names Kevin James and Alan Ritchson. While audiences watch the film out of curiosity to see this “dream couple”, what they get is a forgettable production that brings more disappointment than laughter.
