Antwerp, the Belgian city known as the Diamond City, is facing the largest diamond heist in history. On February 17, 2003, on a typical Monday morning, a vault in the Diamond Center in the diamond district was broken into and 300 million worth of diamonds were stolen. The fact that the robbery was carried out without any force or violence was a mystery to the police.

The investigation began by examining the Diamond Center’s security camera recordings and alarm systems. Although there were 24 cameras, the recordings had disappeared on February 15 and 16, the days of the robbery. The alarm system had not been activated, raising suspicions that this was the work of an insider. Police questioned security guards, doormen and the building manager, but all of them were found to be innocent.

Meanwhile, the police found several garbage bags in a forest area called Floordambos. In these bags, documents related to the Diamond Center, torn banknotes, tools and video cassette boxes were found. The recordings on these video cassettes had been removed. Police academy students were used to collect fragments of video tapes scattered along the highway and reassembled them. However, the reassembled video contained a pornographic film. However, a “working order” written in Italian was found in the garbage bags, which was for the installation of a security system in an office at Schupstraat 911. This address was the same as the Diamond Center.

Although the office had been rented for more than two years, it had never been used. According to the building manager, the office was rented by an Italian businessman named Leonardo Notarbartolo. Leonardo had a previous conviction for theft. He is suspected of being a member of a criminal group called “The School of Turin.” The group consisted of locksmiths, computer experts, and alarm system experts.

Leonardo claimed that he was not the mastermind behind the robbery, but that he was tasked with the task by a man named Alessandro. Alessandro had given Leonardo a pen with a camera and instructed him to take pictures of the vault. Before the robbery, the group had entered the Diamond Center several times over several months, studying the security systems and planning to disable them. They had used tricks to open the vault door, disable motion sensors, heat sensors, and light sensors, and disable the magnetic system on the main door.

On the night of the robbery, Leonardo and his group entered the diamond center, stole the diamonds, and left around 5:00–5:30 a.m. They also took the stolen goods and equipment. However, evidence found in garbage bags left in Flordembos, especially SIM cards, helped police track their movements. Based on phone records and DNA tests, police confirmed that four men, Ferdinando Finotto, Elio D’Onorio, Pietro Tavano, and Leonardo Notarbartolo, were involved in the crime.

Ultimately, Leonardo Notarbartolo was named as the ringleader of the robbery, and was sentenced to ten years in prison. The other members were sentenced to five years. However, none of the stolen diamonds were ever recovered. Although Leonardo did not give specific details about the amount of diamonds he received, it is suspected that he received a large sum of money. This story provides a deep insight into the ingenuity of criminals, police investigation methods, and the true nature of a crime.
