The story revolves around a therapist named Cynthia and her daughter Jordan. Cynthia has an unusual ability; she can enter people’s minds and see their deepest traumas and fears. Jordan helps her mother with her work. Their lives are touched by a patient named Larry. He is struggling with a traumatic memory from his past.
One day, a young girl named Riley Harris comes to their house. She says she sees a dark, scary “thing” that is following her. Riley also has mysterious scars on her hands. Riley’s father, Randall, is very protective and seems to be hiding some terrible secret. Cynthia is afraid to get involved in this situation because her husband (Jordan’s father) died when he went to help in a similar situation in the past.
But Jordan decides to help Riley. When she goes to Riley’s house, Randall locks her up. Randall reveals that the dark force within Riley needs to be “fed”, and that he kills others to do so. When Riley tries to help Jordan escape, she is unfortunately killed by her father.
After Riley dies, the dark force enters Jordan’s body. Randall tries to kill Jordan to stop the force from spreading further, and he buries her in the woods. Cynthia and her friend Agatha find Jordan and rescue her. Cynthia enters Jordan’s mind and, with the help of her dead husband’s memories, fights the dark force and defeats it.
Eventually, Randall surrenders to the police, and more human body parts are found in his house, revealing that he is a serial killer. Jordan recovers, and it turns out that she, like her mother, has the ability to enter the minds of others.
