Nancy lives in Holland, Michigan. She thinks it’s the best place in the world. She feels safe and happy with her husband Fred and son Harry. But sometimes she wonders if it’s all true.
At the beginning of the story, it’s spring, and she hears a radio program about gardening. The tulips are in bloom, and it’s “tulip season.”
Nancy has a maid named Candy at her house. One day, Nancy questions Candy about stealing something. Candy admits to stealing bacon, but Nancy asks about something else. Nancy gives Candy a few days off and tells her to come back when she’s ready to tell the truth. This makes Harry angry, because he thinks his mother kicked Candy out for something trivial.
Later, Nancy begins to suspect her husband, Fred. Fred is frequently on business trips, and Nancy finds his behavior strange. She finds evidence in Fred’s pocket that he went to Madison, but he said he was going to Fort Wayne. She also finds Polaroid film, but they don’t have a Polaroid camera. Nancy thinks Fred is having an affair and that he uses the Polaroids to take “kinky” photos of his girlfriend.
Nancy talks about this with her friend Dave. Dave is a high school teacher. They plan to sneak into Fred’s office and look for evidence. Dave has an eye exam with Fred, during which he tries to leave the bathroom window open. But he fails and runs away.
However, they later try again and manage to get into Fred’s office. There they find more evidence – a woman’s underwear, handcuffs, and dog food (Pup-Peronis). Nancy confirms that Fred is engaging in strange sexual acts. While they are at the office, Fred unexpectedly arrives. Nancy and Dave manage to escape.
Later, Nancy and Dave develop a relationship. Nancy considers divorcing Fred, but decides not to, fearing losing Harry and thinking about his status in society.
But Fred’s secrets are revealed to be even darker. Nancy discovers that the women in the photographs Fred had have disappeared or been murdered. She realizes that Fred may be a serial killer.
Dave goes to confront Fred and tells him that Fred tried to kill him and that he killed him in self-defense. But at the end of the story, Fred returns and threatens Nancy and Harry. In a confrontation between Nancy and Harry, Nancy shoots Fred. In the end, Nancy, Harry, and the injured Dave are together, their futures uncertain.
