The cool breeze of Halloween night swept through the city streets. The orange light of pumpkin lanterns danced with the dark shadows. This was Max’s favorite night. She was an eighteen-year-old young magician. To others, Halloween was about candy and scary costumes. But to Max, it was a festival of magic and illusion; a stage for her own art.
That night, she was putting on a little show for a group of her friends near an old, abandoned theater. Her skillful hands were working quickly with the cards. “See,” she said with a smile, “real magic is all about distraction.”
“Wouldn’t you like to see real magic?”
The voice came from a dark corner. Everyone turned around. There, dressed in a tattered, colorful costume and a mask with a terrifying, perpetual smile on its face, stood a man. It was ‘The Jester’.
The friends thought it was part of a Halloween prank. “Okay, show me your trick,” Max’s friend Tom said challengingly.
The Jester shook his head. He conjured up a red handkerchief with his hand and threw it at Tom. The handkerchief disappeared into thin air. In the next second, it was wrapped tightly around Tom’s throat. He was struggling, unable to breathe. The laughter turned to fear. Max ran to remove the handkerchief, but it was as stiff as steel wire.
The Jester applauded. His magic was real. The end of his tricks, as the poster said, would end in blood.
Max and her surviving friends rushed into the theater. The doors all closed on their own. They were trapped with a supernatural killer. The Jester was playing with them. The stage curtains opened on their own, and disappearing cabinets appeared. “Who’s ready for my next show?” The Jester’s distorted voice echoed throughout the hall.
Max realized: this was not a battle of strength. This was a battle of wits. One magician against another magician.
The Jester called Max to the stage. “Let’s see, little magician,” he said. “Can your fake tricks match my real magic?”
He threw a fierce, sharp shower of cards at Max. Max, using the speed she had gained from her magical training, jumped into a ‘trapdoor’ in the stage and barely escaped.
“Good!” The Jester shouted. “But get out of this!” As he raised his hands, the mirrors around the stage began to form thousands of his own monstrous images.
But Max knew about mirrors too. She took out a small mirror in her hand and reflected a light onto the main image of the Jester. The real Jester was momentarily blinded.
Max understood; the Jester’s power rested on illusion and the audience’s fear. She stopped being afraid. “Your greatest trick is an illusion!” she shouted.
She caught the Jester’s attention and lured him towards a huge, heavy chandelier hanging from the stage. As the Jester chased after her, Max used her ‘disappearance’ trick—she activated a smoke machine hidden in the stage and hid behind a dark curtain.
As the jester, in a daze, came to the center, Max cut a rope from behind the stage. The giant lantern collapsed on top of the jester.
Everything was silent. The terrifying laughter had stopped. Halloween night was ending, and dawn was breaking. Max, trembling as she was, had survived. She learned that night: Some tricks aren’t for fun. Some magic is filled with real blood.
