The Prosecutor’s Battle
Fok Chi-ho was a former police officer who later joined the Department of Justice (DOJ). His career was full of challenges, especially the case involving a young man named Ma Ka-kit.
Ma Ka-kit was accused of drug trafficking after receiving a package in the mail. He claimed to be innocent and had given his address to someone else for a fee. However, under the misleading advice of a lawyer (Lee Se-man), he pleaded guilty. As a result, he was sentenced to a long 27 years in prison. His grandfather, who strongly believed in his grandson’s innocence, was deeply shocked by the verdict.
Fok Chi-ho was suspicious of the case. He began to investigate on his own and discovered an organized crime ring involving Au Pak-man, Lee Se-man, and Love Siu-keung. He was convinced that this group was exploiting loopholes in the law to trap innocent people and save the real criminals.
Fok Chi-ho faced opposition from within the legal department and threats from outside parties as he sought the truth. But he was undeterred and took steps to re-examine Ma Ka-kit’s case. New evidence and witnesses were presented. The evidence of witness Chan Kwok-wing in particular was decisive.
In the end, Ma Ka-kit was acquitted in the retrial. Fok Chi-ho told the court that sometimes the evidence might not be true and that loopholes in the law might be exploited by criminals. But he stressed that it was everyone in the legal profession’s responsibility to stand up for truth and justice, as allowing an innocent person to be wrongly convicted could destroy an entire family. This reaffirmed that justice was paramount.
