A carpenter named Halasyam dies suddenly. His sons Durai and Sami, his wife and her sister, and the rest of the family, including his wife, are in mourning. However, after his death, an unusual swelling (‘bubble’) develops on Halasyam’s body, causing great distress and anxiety. They try hard to hide this embarrassing condition from their neighbors and relatives.
They try various methods to flatten the swelling; trying to crush it with a mortar and pestle, applying plaster bandages, etc. When nothing works, they decide to take the body to a hospital. They take the body to the hospital in an autorickshaw, claiming that he is drunk, but the doctor who comes to the house refuses to treat him. Later, they even consider seeking the help of a veterinarian.
Meanwhile, they have to avoid unnecessary questioning from neighbors like Kamala and prevent their secret from leaking to friends like Amin and Rangaraj. To hide the swelling, they have to make the body sit on a chair, making up lies that Halasyam wanted to sit on a chair like a teacher or a police officer. The situation is further complicated by the arrival of Halasyam’s brother, a police officer named Singaram.
Finally, they bring a freezer box and put the body in it, making up another lie (a desire to visit Kashmir) to hide the swelling. Meanwhile, more problems arise with the arrival of a woman named Vanithamani, who claims to be Halasyam’s mistress. She tries to prove her relationship by telling about a birthmark the size of a grapefruit on Halasyam’s thigh.
Amidst all this confusion, the swelling disappears on its own. Finally, the funeral is held, and it is revealed that taking another pill (like Viagra) along with the Halasyam diabetes pills caused this unusual condition.
