The Story of the Kulu Monkey

In some cultures, the monkey is a mystical creature; a rain-bringing creature, considered a gift from the gods. The ancients believed that their scales vibrated to cause thunder, and seeing them was a blessing. But this innocent creature is facing a serious threat today. That is the illegal pet trade. Their scales are trafficked on a large scale, especially for traditional Chinese medicine. If this trade continues at this rate, they will be extinct in the world in two or three decades.

This story revolves around a small monkey cub who is rescued from such traffickers. He was originally called “Gijima”. When Gijima was rescued, he was a very small, frightened cub. His only protection was to curl up in a ball. Having had terrible experiences at the hands of humans, rehabilitating him was not an easy task.

A man named Gareth took on the responsibility of caring for Gijima. Gareth had to work hard to overcome Gijima’s fear, build his trust, and get him used to finding food in the wild. Because Gijima always tried to run, Gareth changed his name to “Kulu”, which means “easy” in Zulu. Over time, Gareth and Kulu developed a deep bond. Kulu gradually began to play and trust Gareth.

The process of re-introducing Kulu to the wild was fraught with challenges. There were dangers such as electric fences and collapsing burrows, as well as threats from predators. On one occasion, a burrow collapsed and Kulu was trapped for six days, and Gareth and a group of others worked hard to rescue him.

After a six-month rehabilitation period, it was time to release Kulu. Satellite technology was used to monitor him. After being released, Kullu adapted well to the natural environment. He found his own territory and began to live like a wild animal. He even tried to hide from Gareth, which was a sign of his independence.

The cheetah is a unique animal on Earth. They have evolved since the time of the dinosaurs. It is the responsibility of all of us to protect their existence. Kullu’s story reminds us that we still have a chance to save this innocent species, which is facing the threat of extinction due to human cruelty.
