Anna comes to Oxford University from the United States to study Victorian poetry. She already has a job on Wall Street, and is preparing to return to America after finishing her studies at Oxford. On her first day at university, she meets her new friends Maggie and Charlie. Charlie is very outgoing and funny, and Anna’s new professor, Jamie Davenport, makes her uncomfortable on her first day. He tries to bribe the students with cake, which Anna refuses, but then forces her to eat it.
He makes Anna read a poem by Edna St. Vincent Millay, which changes her life. The poem is about the price of a life well lived, but it is worth it. The poem sheds light on love, life, and impermanence. Anna learns about Jamie’s past. After his brother Eddie dies, he and his father have a falling out. Jamie also has cancer and no longer wants to spend time in the hospital.
During this time, Anna and Jamie develop a relationship. Anna visits his house and sees a collection of model cars that he has, which he says he built with his father and his deceased brother. On Anna’s birthday, Jamie throws her a party. There, she meets Jamie’s father, William. Anna forces him to talk about Jamie’s illness, which leads to a fight between the two. Anna eventually decides to quit her job on Wall Street and stay at Oxford. Although her mother is not happy about it, her friends appreciate it. At the end of the story, Jamie asks Anna to stay at Oxford, and the two decide to live together.
