Lifeline
Stephen Thomas is a counselor at a call center called “Lifeline.” It was New Year’s Eve. A colleague had to leave suddenly, so Stephen had to take on extra work. Even though the office was deserted, the calls kept coming in.
One of the calls came from a woman named Mary. She was suffering from severe depression and suicidal thoughts. She was on vacation in Palm Springs and was afraid that her husband, Jason, would harm her. Stephen listened patiently, trying to calm her down. He suggested that she use a safe word (“He’s so wonderful”) to alert her if her husband came home in case of danger. Mary then hung up, but Jason called her back a short time later. Mary, even in front of her husband, used the agreed-upon safe word to signal to Steven that she was in danger. Steven, who acted immediately, gave Mary’s address to the Palm Springs police. The police later arrested Jason, and Mary was hospitalized with a head injury.
Another call came from a young man who also identified himself as Steven Thomas. He had also bought a gun with the intention of committing suicide and was staying at a motel. He was frustrated with his life and said that he could not change anything. This Steven was a reminder of the past of the counselor Steven. He also said that he had been mentally ill at some point and spoke of painful experiences in his past (especially abuse from his father). The counselor Steven tried to free the young Steven from these thoughts. He meticulously learned the name of the motel (“Red Palm Motel”) and the room number (15) where the young man was staying and informed the police. However, when the police arrived, no one was there, but an old bullet mark was found in the room.
Meanwhile, Stephen spoke on the phone with his wife Vivian and brother Andrew, talking about his past, his parents, and the memoir he was writing.
This story tells us that even in the darkest moments of life, listening to those who seek help and giving the right guidance can save a life, and that while the pain of the past can affect the present, helping others can open a way to heal one’s own wounds.
