The story revolves around a young army soldier named Shankar. Although he was considered a hero in his village, his real job in the army was as a cook. This made him very frustrated. The people of the village thought that he was fighting on the border with a gun, but in reality he was cooking for the soldiers.
Shankar fell in love with a girl named Ganga. She loved him back and wanted to marry him. But Ganga’s father, Shankar being an army soldier, did not like their marriage. He was afraid that if Shankar died in a battle on the border, his daughter would be left alone.
One day, a news report about a clash on the border was broadcast on television. Shankar was injured, or so it was believed, and the people of the village celebrated with great pride, considering him a true hero. The village headman (Gowda) and other villagers decided to carve a statue of Shankara using a large black stone (Kala Patthar) in the village as a tribute to him.
This statue brought great fame to the village. People came to see it and some believed that it had supernatural powers. The politicians of the village (MLA and Gowda) also tried to take advantage of this statue for their own gain.
Meanwhile, Shankara had to face strange experiences. When something happened to the statue (exposure to sunlight, getting wet in the rain, being bitten by birds, being bitten by insects), Shankara also felt the same effect. He thought that his life was connected to the statue. Because of this, he took great pains to protect the statue. He tried to build fences, walls, and even guarded it. This situation alienated the villagers and even his girlfriend Ganga.
Later, when the village experienced a water shortage, it was discovered that there was a spring of water under the statue. The villagers tried to remove the statue and get water, but Shankara resisted. Finally, he saw a doctor, who explained that Shankara was experiencing a mental condition, an illusion caused by excessive intimacy. After seeking advice from an actor he admired, Shankara realized that people and his work were more important than a statue.
