Today I’m going to tell you a story about the movie “I’m Still Here”. This is a movie based on a true story that was released in 2024. This story begins in 1971, during the military regime in Brazil.

In the first part of the story, we see a happy family. A member of parliament named Rubens Paiva, his wife Eunice, and their five children live happily together. But that happiness did not last long. One day, a group of military officers came to their house and arrested Rubens.

A few days later, Eunice and her eldest daughter Eliana were arrested by the military and began to be interrogated. At that time, Eunice realized that this was not a simple interrogation. She and her daughter were detained for several days and then released. But they did not give any information about Rubens.

Then Eunice started a fight on her own. She went everywhere – to the police, to military camps, to meet with lawyers. But no one offered to help. The army said that Rubens had escaped. But Eunice knew that was a lie.

Meanwhile, Eunice decided that she needed to protect her children. So she moved home to São Paulo. And at the age of 48, she began studying law. She became a human rights lawyer.

Twenty-five years later, in 1995, the Brazilian government admitted that Rubens Paiva had been killed by the army. But his body has still not been found. The military officers who killed him have not been punished.

Eunice Paiva spent the last years of her life suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. She died in 2018 at the age of 89. But her fight remains an example for human rights activists in Brazil to this day.

This film shows us the strength of a mother fighting against injustice. It also tells about the suffering of ordinary people under military rule. When we watch this, we really understand how important it is to fight for justice.
