How “The First Shadow” Came to the Stage: A Behind-the-scenes Story
This story unfolds the incredible journey of creating “Stranger Things: The First Shadow,” a stage adaptation of Netflix’s wildly popular series “Stranger Things.” When Netflix initially announced that Stephen Daldry was interested in producing a stage play of “Stranger Things,” the Duffer Brothers, the creators of the series, were surprised. They thought it would be a musical adaptation of the first season. But Stephen’s idea was that it should be a new story. And so the seeds of “The First Shadow” were planted.
Work accelerated when screenwriter Kate Treffrey joined the project. Although she was considered the “Stranger Things” team’s secret weapon, she had little experience in the world of stage theater. But with her courage and talent, she was able to create on stage things that even a film could not do.
The drama was set in 1959. It explored the early years and backstories of the series’ main characters, Hopper, Joyce, and Bob. In particular, the origins of Henry Creel, aka One, and his relationship with Bob Newby’s sister, Patty, were the main themes of the drama. It was both a love story and a mystery. Like the series, the drama also flowed through a number of different storylines, leading the audience to an unexpected and emotional conclusion. The drama also contained hints regarding the fifth season.
The process of creating the drama was full of challenges. The team had to overcome many obstacles, such as casting, repeated editing of the script, technical challenges of stage design, special effects, and fighting against time.
