Dreams of Mumbai
“Some say this city is a dream city. But to me it seems like an illusion.” Prabha wrote in her diary.
Prabha, who had been working as a nurse in Mumbai for twenty-three years, had come to a turning point in her life. Her husband, who had left for a job in Germany, had not had any contact with her for a long time. She was suffering from the pain of loneliness.
At the hospital, she befriended a young nurse named Anu. Anu was in a romantic relationship with a young Muslim man named Shias. The other hospital staff members who came to know about this relationship criticized it. But Prabha supported Anu.
One day, her friend Parvati was facing the risk of losing her old house. A construction company was planning to demolish Parvati’s house. Prabha offered to help her.
“There is no place for people like us in this city,” said Parvati. “We built their buildings, cleaned their drains, cooked their food. But they don’t let us live with them.”
Meanwhile, the hospital doctor Manoj was attracted to Prabha. He wrote her a poem. But Prabha rejected his proposal, saying that she was a married woman.
One day, Prabha met her husband on the beach. He said that he had lived a difficult life working in a factory in Germany. “While I was in the darkness of the factory, I thought about the light. But I couldn’t remember the light. I thought about you,” he said.
But Prabha was a different woman now. She no longer wanted to bear the pain of the past. “I don’t want to see you again,” she said decisively.
Anu and Shias’ love story also ended sadly. Their relationship could not continue in the face of societal pressures.
“There is an unwritten law in this city,” Prabha thought. “Even if you live in a gutter, you can’t feel anger. This is called the ‘Mungbai spirit’. You have to believe in this magic. Otherwise you will go crazy.”
Prabha finally realized that the love and peace she was looking for in this city was within herself. She became strong enough to face loneliness. The lesson that Mumbai taught her was that everyone is fighting the illusions of their own lives.
“Some call it the city of dreams. But for me, it is a city of illusion. Everything here is temporary, impermanent. But it took time to understand that,” Prabha wrote in her final note.
