The New Neighbor in the Village
Professor Lee Jun-in and his wife Kim Hyun-sook moved away from the hustle and bustle of the city to a quiet rural area. The doctor named Park Yuk-nam lived next door to their new home. He was a very quiet and strange character.
For the first few days, the Lees tried to befriend their neighbor, but the doctor’s silence and awkward behavior made it difficult. One day, they invited the doctor to a tea party, but the meeting was also awkward for both parties.
After a while, Dr. Park began to come to the Lees’ house every day at 4 p.m. without any notice. His presence and the hours he spent sitting in silence without talking became a headache for the Lees. They tried various ways to get rid of him. One day they left home at 3:50 PM and tried to avoid him. Another day they tried to ignore the knock on the door. But the doctor became even more stubborn. He started banging on the door.
Meanwhile, So-jun, a friend of the Lees, arrived from Canada. The doctor arrived at 4 PM on the day she arrived. So-jun, angered by his strange behavior and stubbornness, abruptly left.
Professor Lee, who was very angry at this, scolded and beat the doctor the next day when he came. Since then, the doctor has not come. But his absence did not bring relief to Professor Lee, but more stress. One night, Professor Lee saw the doctor trying to commit suicide by inhaling the fumes from the car. Although he saved the doctor, he regretted it.
Later, Professor Lee went to the doctor’s house and saw the doctor’s wife, Sera, lying helpless there. The doctor’s wife was seriously ill, and the professor realized that he was living in hell. The doctor was returning from the hospital, and on the way, Professor Lee forced him to commit suicide again.
A few days later, the doctor died. After his death, Professor Lee and his wife went to visit the doctor’s wife, Sera. At the end of the story, Professor Lee also reflects on a philosophical saying, thinking about the happiness of not knowing oneself.
