Yamakathagi: Voices of Voiceless Girls
This story revolves around a young girl named Leela. She suffers from epilepsy, and her relationship with her father Selvaraj and uncle Murugan is not very cordial. Five years ago, Murugan publicly accused her of stealing, and later apologized privately. Leela is deeply hurt by this. Because of this, she refuses to go to a function at her uncle’s house.
Meanwhile, the village temple is preparing for the festival. Her father Selvaraj is appointed as the caretaker, which displeases a man named Ratnam. Selvaraj’s son Muthu and his friends try to make a quick buck by stealing a crown from a deity in the temple, pawning it. They plan to replace it before the function begins on Monday.
One day, Selvaraj gets into a heated argument with Leela. Ratnam is furious over a false accusation that Leela was talking to another boy. Leela, unable to bear her father’s harsh words, commits suicide. To protect the family’s honor and avoid a police investigation, Selvaraj and the family decide to cover up her death as an accident.
However, when they try to perform Leela’s last rites, a series of mysterious events take place. Her body cannot be lifted, and it feels too heavy. Some see her limbs shaking. This causes various rumors to spread among the villagers. Some say that she has an unfulfilled desire, while others say that she is waiting to take someone else with her.
Finally, the family doctor, realizing that the truth cannot be hidden, reveals that Leela committed suicide. Selvaraj also confesses the truth in front of the villagers. Meanwhile, Leela’s boyfriend, Anbu, tells the police about the last conversation he had with her before she died. The conversations recorded on Leela’s phone reveal the stress and despair that led to her death. Leela’s brother, Muthu, also confesses that he opposed Leela’s love affair and threatened her under his father’s influence. The truth about the stolen crown is also revealed.
To comfort Leela’s soul, a saree belonging to her maternal aunt Kannamma (who had also committed suicide) who had been locked in the room where she died for years is brought and draped over Leela’s body. After that, Leela’s last rites can be performed.
The story deeply depicts the oppression women face in a patriarchal society, the consequences of hiding the truth in the name of family honor, and human emotions such as love, hate, and regret.
