Echoes of War
“This is not easy,” the soldier groaned. The air was heavy with dust and gunfire. “Yes, this is very difficult,” another replied. Their voices were strained.
As explosions could be heard in the distance, the squad leader looked at his comrades. “Remember who we are fighting for!” His voice was filled with determination. The soldiers’ faces showed fear and courage in equal measure.
As they advanced, a house caught their eye. “This house looks good. Shall we take it?” one of the soldiers suggested. “Yes, sir!” was the reply. They slowly approached the house. Although the surroundings were quiet, there was a hidden danger in that silence.
Suddenly, the leader received a message. “Sir, there is a wall here.” “What? A wall?” he asked. “This is a two-story house, sir. Up and down.” “Okay, break it!” the leader ordered.
Before long, a radio message broke their composure. “Redman 0-6, Profane 5-4. Person moving north of your position. Civilian traffic east to west of your building.” The situation was becoming increasingly serious.
As the battle intensified, they received another message. “All units, all units. Clearance operations complete. All friendly units are now returning to base. Baker Company has been repositioned two kilometers northwest of your position.”
“Understood. Sir, Baker Company was here. Now they are here. Two kilometers this way.” One of the soldiers said, pointing to a map.
Enemy movement was observed to the east of their position. “At nine o’clock in the morning, we saw a group of people observing our position from the direction of building number 1-7-4, east of our position, east of Route Boiler.” “At twelve o’clock in the morning, we saw a large group of people gathering at building number 1-7-5, north of Route Spartan.”
Another tip came: “At sixteen o’clock in the morning, a blue Daewoo with military-age males was traveling north along Route Lakers.” Although the communication signal was weak, the exchange of information was essential.
Suddenly, one of the soldiers shouted. “A male wearing a white T-shirt and dark tracksuit pants is watching our position at the northwest corner of building number four.” “Does he have weapons?” the leader asked. “No, no weapons.” A report was made on the mysterious person.
One of the soldiers had a blue Nike hoodie missing from the camp, and he asked that anyone wearing it should report it and not shoot. Even in the harshness of the battlefield, even such small things stuck in their minds.
A charge was made against an attempt to break through a wall in the building they were in. “We heard that wall breaking all night. Why didn’t you use a charge?” “I didn’t want to make a sound,” was the answer. But it didn’t seem to work.
Again, a man was reported at the end of the building. “He was monitoring our position. Do you see any suspicious activity or gathering of people that could be a threat?” “No, 0-6. Everything is fine,” came the reply.
But a man wearing a hood and a red-and-green jacket kept looking at them. “This is the fourth time this guy has done that.” “Is the man spying or just watching?” “Seriously spying and just watching.”
Before long, the situation took a turn for the worse. “Alpha One, Bravo One, we’re in a T.I.C. (Troops in Conflict with the Enemy). We’re getting rocket and small arms fire.” Air support had been diverted to another area, and they were helpless.
“Captain Eric,” a translator came. “They’re calling all Muslims to jihad. Come on. Kill you. Kill the Americans.” “Okay. Lock down the lower deck,” the leader ordered.
Before long, a grenade attack hit their position. “Grenade!” The explosion sent chaos into the air. “Frank, Tommy, Elliot? Are you okay?” Elliott was wounded. He called for immediate medical evacuation (cas-evac).
All the observation posts were under attack. “We’re going to the first floor and evacuate Elliott. Pack your things. Get ready to go.” The medical team was told that it would take ten minutes for medical assistance to arrive.
As soon as the vehicle carrying the wounded left, a large I.E.D. (improvised explosive device) exploded. The dark shadows of death surrounded them again. “We’ve taken heavy damage. An enemy attack could happen at any moment. Come to us quickly!”
In the blood and smoke, they fought for their lives. They treated their wounded comrades, faced the enemy, and protected each other. Finally, more medical support vehicles arrived, and they escaped the death trap. But the wounds and memories of war would stay with them for the rest of their lives.
