The Dark World and the Struggle for Survival
The story takes place during the darkest period of World War II. A group of prisoners in a Nazi concentration camp or ghetto are facing a harsh reality. They are torn between the hope of survival and the fear of death.
“Wolf, don’t!” someone warns. Hiding is their only protection. They are shivering from the cold and don’t even have a pair of shoes; they are warned that if they don’t cover their toes, they will lose them. One tries to send a message to his wife, Clara, that he will come for them. But another says, “Tell me yourself. Tonight.”
Although there is hope that the Russians will come by spring, some doubt that they will survive even a week. A plan for escape is discussed. They think of cutting the side of the truck with a knife. But they have tried it before with a stone and failed. “Where will they go then?” The question arises, since all the Jews in the vicinity have been captured. One of them suggests escaping to the Grabow ghetto and seeking help from Rabbi Shulman there. But there is another fear: will the rest die if they escape? But with half of those being taken away daily not returning, escape seems the only option. “We must be fearless if we want to live,” one says.
A new group of prisoners arrives. They are brought to the Kulmhof transit center and promised good jobs in a factory in Leipzig. But before the journey, they are made to bathe and disinfect their clothes, feigning a typhus scare. They are ordered to deposit valuables in exchange for a receipt. They are also encouraged to write letters to their families informing them of their safety. A man named Solomon recognizes Aaron from Cologne. Aaron asks about his son Moshe, but before Solomon can answer, he is taken away.
Reality is brutal. The prisoners learn that the new arrivals are being gassed. Someone hides a pencil, to write to the world about the horrors that are happening. They are put to the terrible task of burying the bodies. Michael sees his family (Clara and children Guta and Abos) among the dead. He breaks down and asks to be killed too. But Solomon comforts him and tells him to keep working.
Finally, Solomon and Michael plan to escape again. People like Goldman do not agree. But Solomon and Michael do not change their mind. They inform the others that they are escaping. They write down the names of the dead. While traveling in the truck, Goldman uses a trick to distract attention. Solomon and Michael jump out of the truck and into the river. Michael is shot and wounded, and Solomon breaks a leg. After a difficult journey, they reach a farm. A woman there helps them by giving them train uniforms.
They reach the Grabow Ghetto and find Rabbi Shulman. They tell the rabbi that Chelmno is not a labor camp but a death camp, and about the horrific killings taking place there. Although the rabbi does not believe them at first, after seeing their testimony and the situation, he promises to write their story and tell the world. Eventually, a news report is broadcast on the BBC radio, alerting the world to these brutal crimes.
