The story revolves around a young woman named Elvira. She lives a difficult life with her stepmother, Rebecca, and her half-sister, Agnes. After the death of her father, the family faces financial difficulties, and Rebecca’s only goal is to marry her daughter into the royal family and gain wealth and power.
At the beginning of the story, Elvira is considered “ugly”, and is ridiculed, especially for her braces and the shape of her nose. However, when Prince Julien announces a royal ball to choose a bride, Elvira’s life begins to change. Rebecca has a “doctor esthetician” perform a series of painful cosmetic surgeries to make Elvira “beautiful” enough for the prince. Her teeth are straightened, her nose is changed, and she is given a new look.
Meanwhile, Agnes, hoping to win the prince, adopts a strange and dangerous method to slim down – swallowing a tapeworm egg. She believes that this will make her slimmer, even if she eats as much as she wants.
On the night of the royal ball, Elvira dresses up in a new outfit, and the prince is captivated by her figure and dances with her. But just like in fairy tales, Elvira is forced to flee as midnight approaches. While fleeing, she loses one of her shoes. The prince seeks out the mysterious girl who danced with him and declares that he will marry the one who fits the shoe.
Rebecca and Agnes struggle to get Agnes to wear the shoe. When the shoe doesn’t fit, Rebecca is tempted to cut off part of her foot. However, in the end, the shoe fits Elvira.
But the story does not end there. As Elvira and the prince prepare to marry, Agnes’ secret (the tapeworm) is revealed, causing a great commotion. The final part of the story depicts Elvira fleeing the toxic family environment and the kingdom with her real sister Alma and their helper Isaac (possibly a stable boy). They try to free Agnes from the tapeworm, and eventually the three of them leave the border in search of a new, free life.
This can be considered a darker, more twisted and more realistic version of the famous Cinderella story. The story highlights the pressures of a society that prioritizes external appearance, the complexity of family relationships and the search for true happiness.
