“The Sound of Music” is a 1965 musical film that is considered an evergreen classic of Hollywood cinema. Directed by Robert Weiss, the film was based on the book “The Story of the Trapp Family Singers,” which is based on the true life story of Maria von Trapp. Starring the immortal performances of Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, the film has won the hearts of audiences around the world for generations.

The story of the film is set in the beautiful city of Salzburg, Austria, in the 1930s, as the dark shadows of World War II were falling. The main character, Maria, is a free-spirited, lively young woman training to become a nun. Her mischievous, musical nature does not fit in with the strict rules of the convent, so the abbess temporarily assigns her to another duty. She is the governess to the seven children of Georg von Trapp, a retired naval captain who has taken a strict approach to his wife’s death.

Captain von Trapp rules his household according to military discipline. His children, who act according to the whistle, are deprived of their father’s love, sad and lonely. Although at first the children try to drive Maria away by harassing her, Maria gradually wins their hearts through her kindness, patience and especially the magic of music. She teaches the children to sing songs such as “Do-Re-Mi,” “My Favorite Things,” and brings laughter and joy back to the house after many years.

Music slowly melts the lives of the children, as well as the captain’s hardened heart. A love story develops between him and Maria, which gives a new turn to their lives.

However, their happiness is interrupted by the Anschluss, when Austria falls under the control of Nazi Germany. Captain von Trapp, a staunch patriot, refuses to serve in the Nazi army. As a result, the entire family faces a terrible danger. They decide to flee their homeland, and they use a musical performance to do so. Expressing their love for their country with the song “Edelweiss” and bidding farewell to the audience with the song “So Long, Farewell”, they cross the mountains in the dark of night and flee to Switzerland in search of freedom.

“The Sound of Music” is not just a love story or a musical film. It is an immortal work of art that teaches the value of family, the power of love and music, the courage to stand up for one’s principles in difficult times, and the value of freedom.
