Stefan Mortensen, a once-respected judge, now lives in a nursing home. A stroke has left him paralyzed on the right side of his body, and he is experiencing occasional memory loss. He hates the place and hopes to recover quickly and return home.
But life in the home is more challenging than he expected. Another resident, Dave Creeley, uses a walking stick called Jenny Penn to intimidate and control the other elderly residents. He specifically targets Mortensen and his roommate, former rugby player Tony Garfield. Creeley steals from Mortensen and accuses him of stealing other people’s things. At night, he intimidates Mortensen and Tony, forcing them to obey him.
Mortensen tries to resist this situation, but is unable to do so due to his poor physical and mental condition, and the indifference of the house staff. He regrets his past, his harshness as a judge, and the way he treated others. He realizes how helpless he is now, and how weak he has become, like the people he once judged.
However, one day Mortensen decides to teach Creeley a lesson using one of Creeley’s own tricks. He steals Creeley’s crutch, the Jenny Pen, while he is asleep, and returns it to him while Creeley is in the bathroom. Later, Mortensen tries to control Creeley, just as Creeley does to others. In the end, Mortensen makes Creeley experience the same humiliation he has endured.
The story depicts the helplessness that comes with aging, the power struggles that exist in nursing homes, and how past actions affect the present. It also shows that power is relative, and how the powerful become the weak when circumstances change.
