The story revolves around a new English teacher named Mitchell who arrives at St. George’s College during a time of political unrest in Argentina. In addition to teaching English, he is also assigned to coach rugby, against his will. In the classroom, he is challenged by some students.
Meanwhile, a military coup takes place in the country, and the college is temporarily closed. In order to escape this situation and to escape the problems in his personal life (his wife leaving him), Mitchell goes on a short trip to the country of Uruguay. There, he meets a woman named Carina. While trying to impress her, they come across a group of penguins bathed in oil on the beach.
They save the life of a penguin chick. But Carina suddenly leaves, claiming that she is married. Although Mitchell tries to release the penguin into the sea, it does not abandon him and follows him. After trying to leave him at a hotel and failing to bring him back to Argentina without paying a fee, Mitchell finally smuggles the penguin back to the school.
He tries to keep the penguin, named ‘Juan Salvador’ (Juan Salvador for short), a secret, but it’s hard. Mitchell befriends Maria, a cleaning lady at the school, and her granddaughter Sofia. Sofia helps feed the penguin. Surprisingly, Mitchell uses the penguin in his English lessons, which improves the students’ interest and results.
However, one day, Sofia is kidnapped by the military. Mitchell sees it, but there’s nothing he can do. The school’s principal, Mr. Buckle, is initially reluctant to help Sofia due to political complications. Mitchell confronts a military officer he believes is responsible for Sofia’s disappearance. As a result, Mitchell is arrested and briefly detained, and is beaten.
The principal ultimately decides to support Mitchell, allow Penguin to stay at school (because his grades have improved), and report Sofia’s case to the authorities. By the end of the school year, Mitchell’s students’ academic performance has improved. But Juan Salvador falls ill and dies. Mitchell reflects on his experiences, his time with Penguin, his friendship, and the importance of acting (the metaphor of “putting the penguin in the pool”).
