Cho Hoon-hyun is the undisputed champion of Go in Korea and the world. He has a very skilled, aggressive style of play. Early in the story, he is competing in a decisive world championship final against China’s Ni Weiping, in which the white player has won all the previous rounds.
Some time later, Cho Hoon-hyun meets a quiet but unusually talented young boy named Lee Chang-ho. At the request of Chang-ho’s grandfather and seeing Chang-ho’s hidden talent, Cho takes him on as his student. Cho tries to teach Chang-ho his aggressive style of play and the principles of Go. However, Chang-ho’s natural style of play is more calm, defensive, and calculated. At first, Chang-ho finds Cho’s teachings a bit difficult, and Cho expresses dissatisfaction with his slow playing style.
However, Chang-ho gradually develops his own unique style of play. He is able to achieve victory through subtle calculations that are invisible to others. Critics call his game the game of the “Stone Buddha” because he plays calmly, without showing any emotion.
Over time, Lee Chang-ho becomes a strong competitor in the Go world, even defeating his teacher, Cho Hoon-hyun. There are many matches between the teacher and the student, which cause great excitement among Go enthusiasts. Cho Hoon-hyun watches his student’s rise with pride and some pain. His student’s defeat of him takes a toll on him emotionally. He tells Chang-ho that he has nothing more to learn from him, and encourages him to become independent.
During a time when Chang-ho is dominating the world of Go, Cho Hoon-hyun suffers a setback. He loses tournaments and becomes depressed. He is encouraged by people like his wife and his old rival Nam Gi-cheol. Cho, recognizing his mistakes and weaknesses, returns to the game with renewed determination.
About a year later, Cho Hoon-hyun returns to the field, advancing to the finals of another decisive tournament against Lee Chang-ho. Here, Cho, using his usual aggressive style of play, as well as new tactics, defeats Lee Chang-ho and wins the championship again. At the end of the film, both of them respect each other and move forward in their respective playing styles, and the challenge and beauty of the game of Go continues.
The story explores themes such as the teacher-student relationship, generational conflict, rivalry, perseverance, victory and defeat.
