The Last Supper and what followed
Once a fisherman, Peter appreciated the modesty and certainty of life. But after meeting Jesus, his life took a different course. Jesus referred to himself as an unhewn stone, saying that he was waiting to be prepared for his great purpose.
Jesus taught his disciples that they are the light of the world and that they should bring glory to God through their good works. He healed the sick, and miraculously fed large crowds with a little food. Although some see Him as a leader against Roman rule, Jesus said His kingdom was not of this world. He called Himself the “bread of life” and said that by eating His flesh and drinking His blood one would have eternal life.
As the Passover approached, Jesus entered Jerusalem and the people welcomed Him as King. But the religious leaders feared his influence. Jesus drove out the merchants in the temple, which prompted the leaders to conspire against Him.
At the Last Supper, Jesus set an example of humility by washing his disciples’ feet. He broke the bread and said, “This is my body,” and gave the cup of wine, “This is my blood, the new covenant,” and commanded them to do it in remembrance of him. He also said that one of them would betray him and that Peter would say he didn’t know him three times before the rooster crowed. Judas Iscariot agreed to betray Jesus for thirty pieces of silver.
After the meal, while Jesus was praying in the Garden of Gethsemane, Judas came with the soldiers and betrayed him with a kiss. Peter took a sword and cut off a servant’s ear, but Jesus stopped him and healed the servant. Jesus was arrested and the disciples fled.
Jesus was taken to the religious leaders, and when He confessed that He was the Son of God, they condemned Him to death. Meanwhile, Peter, standing by the fire, denied being a disciple of Jesus three times [cite: 740, 761, 766-771]. As the rooster crowed, Peter remembered what Jesus had said and was deeply saddened. Judas also repented of what he had done and committed suicide.
Jesus was crucified and put to death. But on the third day He rose from the dead. Later, He appeared to the disciples who were fishing in Galilee. He asked Peter three times, “Do you love me?” And every time Peter answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you,” He commanded, “Feed my sheep.”
Through Jesus’ forgiveness and restoration, Peter, a once fearful rejecter, became a “fisherman” who preached the gospel and brought people to God.
