The Story of Laszlo Toth: An Analysis of the Brutalist Film

Today I am going to tell you a story about an architect named Laszlo Toth. This is a true story.

Born in 1911 in a small fishing village in Austria-Hungary, Laszlo dreamed of looking at the Adriatic Sea. I will tell you some of the most important moments in his life.

First of all, Laszlo became a talented architect. But World War II changed his life completely. He and his wife Erzsébet became prisoners of Nazi death camps. Laszlo was imprisoned in the Buchenwald camp and Erzsébet in the Dachau camp. But by a stroke of fate, both of them escaped.

Later, they emigrated to America. There, Laszlo met a wealthy businessman named Harrison Van Buren. Van Buren gave him the opportunity to design a large building. It was the Van Buren Institute.

During the construction of this building, the love affair between Laszlo and Erzsébet deepened. But both of them were mentally affected by their past camp experiences. Erzsébet in particular became addicted to drugs.

Laszlo designed the building in memory of his camp experiences. He built small rooms similar to those in the camp. But they were covered with a 20-meter-high glass roof. This symbolized free thinking.

Another amazing thing is that he built a secret tunnel system. These represented the two camps of Buchenwald and Dachau. In this way, he tried to rewrite history – in such a way that he and Erzsébet would never be separated.

The Van Buren Institute was completed in 1973. It was Laszlo’s first American architectural work. But Erzsébet had died by then. She went to Israel to see her daughter, Sofia. But she couldn’t live there.

One thing Laszlo always said was, “It’s not the journey, it’s the destination.” That’s true in his life. Because he suffered, made sacrifices, and finally achieved his dream.

This film shows us the complexity of human life. Love, pain, art, and creativity are all mixed together. It also makes us think about the horrors of war and the strength of the human spirit.

In this way, Brutalist is not just a film. It is a deep analysis of the human experience. Characters like Laszlo Toth show us that no matter how difficult our lives are, we can achieve what we set our minds to.

If you watch this film, you will also feel Laszlo’s pain, his love, and the depth of his art. I think this is a film worth watching. Because it is a work that makes us think deeply about our lives.
