The Story of Leo the Sea Lion
A long time ago, a group of sea lions from the west coast of America embarked on an amazing journey across the Pacific Ocean. They found the Galapagos, a paradise made of fire and water, isolated from the rest of the world. The underwater world of this archipelago was second to none.
Over time, the descendants of those original sea lions ruled this sea. One evening, a female sea lion named Luna washed up on a quiet beach. She returned to her native island with her newborn cub, Leo. Since sea lions usually have only one cub, Leo was Luna’s most precious possession in the world. Luna stayed by Leo’s side for the first week.
This small colony of sea lions often consisted of females and cubs. But there was always a powerful male who served as the beachmaster. Leo was a very curious and quick learner. After learning to walk, Leo began to explore the world. The most important lesson was to recognize his mother.
Soon, Luna took Leo to his first swimming lesson. Sea lion cubs learn to swim in as little as a week. But while the land was safe, the water was not; sharks roamed the beach. Luna taught him to swim.
Adult sea lions have to go to sea to find food. Luna had to leave Leo behind and go to sea. Leo felt lonely, and he tried to make friends with crabs and lizards, but it didn’t work. Later, he met another cub named Maya, and the two became good friends.
Luna became a skilled hunter at sea. She and the other sea lions hunted together, but the brown pelicans stole their catch. But Luna and her crew tried again and succeeded.
As Leo grew older, the beachmaster began to be hostile towards him. Leo was separated from his mother and the beach where he was born. He traveled alone among the Galapagos Islands, gaining new experiences. He played with sharks at Devil’s Crown, saw strange birds (waved albatrosses) on Española Island, and saw baby lizards running away from fierce snakes and underwater lizards on Fernandina Island.
He learned new hunting techniques; he enlisted the help of an older male sea lion to hunt tuna. He also faced natural disasters such as volcanic eruptions.
After many years of traveling, Leo is now a powerful, grown male sea lion. He eventually found a secret beach. He fought the elderly beachmaster there and chased him away. A decade later, Leo finally became the leader of his own beach, his own community. He is now a proud beachmaster who protects his community.
