This dreary and overly sentimental Christmas comedy, inexplicably released in early November, stars Dwayne Johnson as Santa’s rugged bodyguard, tasked with rescuing him from kidnappers to save Christmas itself.

Chris Evans co-stars with a fixed smirk as Jack O’Malley, a jaded professional thief who—predictably—has a heart of gold buried somewhere under his roguish exterior. Jack’s skepticism about Christmas stems from a childhood incident when questioning Santa’s existence nearly got him branded as “naughty.” Now, Jack is estranged from the mother of his child and neglects his son, the quintessential formula for a redemption arc.

The plot kicks off when Jack unknowingly gets roped into a villainous scheme to steal the secret coordinates of a magical sleigh led by airborne reindeer. The ultimate goal? Kidnap Santa Claus himself, played by a hilariously buff J.K. Simmons, who seems to be channeling a gym-obsessed Kris Kringle. Simmons’ Santa is all about push-ups and staying fit, perhaps inspired by his head of security, Callum Drift (Johnson), a hulking protector with a brontosaurus-like stoicism. Callum, however, is considering retirement, plagued by a “crisis of faith” in their mission.

Predictably, Callum and Jack are forced to team up. As the pair clash and bond, Callum’s icy demeanor begins to thaw, and his belief in Christmas is rekindled. Lucy Liu, in an underwhelming role, makes a half-hearted appearance as Santa’s right-hand woman, Zoe Harlow, while Kiernan Shipka (of Mad Men fame) valiantly tackles the part of Gryla, a scheming Christmas witch.

But what is Callum’s much-talked-about crisis of faith? Apparently, the naughty-list population has surged by over 20%. A shocking statistic, sure, but the movie offers no real solutions. Are these naughty children getting fewer presents or none at all? The rules of the naughty list remain frustratingly vague despite being central to a convoluted second-act twist.

The film awkwardly dances around its deeper themes, leaving no one in this saccharine world genuinely upset or deprived. Even Jack’s early skepticism about Santa is quickly and predictably resolved, undermining any tension. The narrative then veers into mind-numbing clichés, drowning attempts at humor—including a shoehorned joke referencing Will Smith’s infamous slap.

What ultimately lingers is the unmissable subtext: the importance of shopping. The film’s syrupy moralizing about Christmas spirit boils down to a crass emphasis on consumerism. Despite its big-hearted aspirations, this hollow, cookie-cutter holiday flick feels more like a forgettable toy destined to gather dust—not by Christmas Day, but well before Thanksgiving.
