In the movie Nickel Boys, we see the story of a young man named Elwood Curtis. This story begins with Elwood’s childhood. Elwood lives with his grandmother because his mother and father abandoned him. Elwood is a very good child. He is a good student in school and is inspired by the speeches of Martin Luther King Jr. and supports the civil rights movement.
One day, Elwood is innocently arrested for getting into a stolen car on his way to Melvin Griggs Technical College. After that, Elwood is sent to a school called Nickel Academy. Although it is said that this is a school that is supposed to prepare children, it is actually a place like a prison.
At Nickel, Elwood meets a friend named Turner. Turner is a very realistic person about life. He tells Elwood the truth about this place – how children are killed and buried, how crimes are committed.
Elwood secretly keeps notes about the wrongdoings of the people at the school. When Turner finds out, he is afraid that something will happen to Elwood. So, to save Elwood, Turner decides to run away with them.
They run away at night. But police dogs follow them. Elwood is shot as he runs. Turner shouts that Elwood is okay, but we can clearly see that Elwood is dead.
Years later, a man working for the ACE Moving Company in New York meets an old nickel named Chickie Pete. This man he meets is Turner. But now he calls himself Elwood. We learn that after Elwood dies, Turner has taken on Elwood’s identity and started a new life in New York.
Now, holes have been found in the Nickel Academy, and investigations are underway. Turner/Elwood learns about this. He realizes that he cannot escape the past. So he decides to tell the truth, to testify.
This story shows us about people fighting against racism, injustice, and oppression. It also shows us about the power of friendship, and the importance of telling the truth. This is not just a story – this is a story based on real events that happened in America.
