Jake, a former police officer, is on vacation in Bangkok with his wife, Prang, and their young daughter, Lou. Their trip takes a dark turn when Lou briefly disappears in a park and is found by a mysterious monk named Chan. Chan mysteriously tells Jake that he is the “Keeper of the Gates” and warns him of a future danger.
Later, a violent shooting occurs at a shopping mall. Jake sends his family to safety and promises to meet up later, but stays behind to intervene. He confronts the shooter, Mek, who kills him after Mek utters a curse. Jake is then knocked unconscious by an explosion.
Meanwhile, Prang and Lou try to escape the now chaotic city, encountering strange, hostile people and finding that communication lines are down.
Jake awakens with Chan. Chan explains that they are in a world called “Hindrance”, a sanctuary for lost souls. Chan reveals that Jake died in the mall explosion and is trapped here because he prioritized his job over his family. Chan, the son of a powerful evil sorcerer, Wichian, explains that Jake completed a ritual to open the gates of hell by killing Mek (Wichian’s servant). Wichian needs the blood of Jake’s daughter Lou to fully return, and plans to sacrifice her.
To save his family and stop Wichian, Jake must close the gates. Chan helps him use a temporary corpse to return to the physical world. They discover that Mek has used Jake’s own body to kidnap Prang and Lou. After a confrontation, Jake proves his identity to Lou and Prang by means of a “pinky oath” he had previously given to Lou, and Prang shoots the fake Mech.
Following the clues left by Mech, they find the place where the Witchian is preparing to sacrifice Lou. Jake uses his stronger body to fight. The Witchian reveals that the only way to close the gates of hell is for Jake, the gatekeeper, to go through it. Accepting his responsibility and destiny, Jake tearfully apologizes to his family, promises to return to Lou with another pinky oath, and walks through the gate, closing it. Chan assures Jake that he will protect Prang and Lou.
