The story of the film revolves around the small town of Eastbrook. In this town, a mysterious, sticky parasitic alien creature called “Ick” has been gradually growing over the years. The main character is Hank Wallace (Brandon Routh), a former high school football star who unfortunately loses everything due to a foot injury and becomes a science teacher at the same school. Tormented by regrets about his past and a sense of purposelessness in his present, Hank is one of the few in town who is suspicious of the unusual development of this “Ick”.
Another person who joins his suspicions is his own student, Grace (Malina Wiseman), a sarcastic and sharp-witted person. She also realizes that behind the harmless appearance of this “Ick” lies a serious threat. The story is further complicated when Grace’s mother is Hank’s old girlfriend, Stacey (Mina Suvari), and it is hinted that Grace may be Hank’s own daughter.
Although initially harmless, “Ick” suddenly reveals his true nature, taking over the town’s inhabitants and transforming into a terrifying, terrifying monster. In the face of this alien plague spreading throughout the city, only Hank, Grace and Stacey are left to fight it. They put aside their personal problems and past memories and engage in an uphill battle to save their town from this sticky alien threat.
“Ick” satirizes the apathy that we as a society have towards the obvious threats around us. The director has managed to blend the hyper-boreal action and alien horror typical of B-movies with sharp dialogue and humor. It’s an interesting film that’s not just about an alien battle, but also about the rise of a man struggling with past failures and the complexity of family relationships.
