The Story of Hearts
A new English and music teacher at East Heights High School, Ella Hawthorne, and her math teacher and athletic trainer, Josh Adler, initially have a competitive relationship. With the school’s extracurricular budget cut, the two are forced to compete at a parent-teacher conference to secure funding for Ella’s music program and Josh’s athletic team. Despite both making compelling presentations, the vote is tied.
Meanwhile, a teenage girl named Gina, who is being cared for by a kind-hearted woman named Angie, has also enrolled at the school. Angie calls the children in her care “Hearts.” As Gina struggles to adjust to the school and its new environment, Ella discovers that she has learning disabilities. With Ella’s intervention, Gina was diagnosed with ADHD. Angie, Kiki (Angie’s previously adopted daughter), and other “kindred spirits” provided Gina with the support she needed.
Although initially antagonistic due to the fundraising competition, Josh and Ella began working together. They grew closer by sharing their stories of their past. Together, they planned to obtain a large donation from the school’s alumni association. However, the alumni association, which had only heard about Josh’s sports team, decided to give the money only to the sports department, leading to a misunderstanding between Ella and Josh.
However, Josh proved his sincerity by saying that he would refuse the donation if the music department was not funded as well. The two met again with the heads of the alumni association and negotiated. Eventually, the alumni association agreed to fund one project at a time for ten years, with the first year’s funding going to renovate Ella’s dilapidated music room. In the midst of all this, Josh and Ella’s friendship blossomed into love. Also, the marriage proposal from another “heart” of Angie’s family, Jenna, and her boyfriend Andrew, added to the story. In the end, overcoming challenges, the “hearts” of East Heights School moved forward, supporting each other.
