The Story of Sarah and Josh
The story revolves around Sarah Wolf, a former soldier, and her son Josh. The two go to the American consulate in Frankfurt for a visa interview. While there, Josh suddenly disappears while playing in the playroom. Sarah frantically searches for her son, but the staff at the consulate, including security officer Eric Kinch and Sergeant Donovan, say that Josh was never registered and is not even visible on the security cameras. They believe that Sarah is hallucinating due to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from her service in Afghanistan.
But Sarah is convinced that something is wrong. She escapes from detention at the consulate. There, she meets a political refugee named Kira Volkova, who goes by the alias Irina. Kiera reveals that she has a thumb drive containing evidence against corrupt officials in Belarus, and a group is trying to capture her to get it. Sarah suspects a connection between Josh’s disappearance, Kiera’s condition, and the strange events she saw, such as the exchange of a bag containing drugs.
Together, Sara and Kiera travel through the secure areas of the consulate. They discover that Sergeant Donovan is involved in these events, and that he has even changed Sara’s employment and consulate records. Sara contacts a journalist who is investigating the past of Security Chief Kinch. The journalist reveals information about the attack in Afghanistan in which Sara’s husband was killed and she was the only survivor. He confirms that Kinch is responsible for the attack.
Sarah realizes that Kinch has been using her as a tactic to kidnap or kill Kiera. At the same time, his plan is to eliminate her, the only witness to the crime in Afghanistan. Kinch admits that he kidnapped Josh to control him. Sarah uses her fighting skills to confront Kinch. Eventually, she takes Kinch’s daughter Eileen hostage in a safe room and pressures Kinch. She is even prepared to sacrifice her own life to expose Kinch and ensure Josh’s safety. But eventually, the consulate authorities intervene, overhear Kinch’s confession, and arrest him. Sarah survives her injuries, and she is eventually reunited with Josh. The story ends as Sarah and Josh prepare to leave for America.
