The Flame of Swarajya: Shivaji and Sambhaji

In the distant past, a great civilization was being built in India. People of different religions lived as one family, but the fertile land was oppressed by invaders. In the 16th century, the mighty Mughal Empire raised its flag on the throne of Delhi. During this dark period, many kings and kingdoms fought for their survival.

In the 17th century, the extremely cruel Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb ascended the throne, and his rule brought terrible oppression. But when terror and cruelty rise on the earth, a great spirit is born to protect it. With the blessings of Goddess Bhavani and Lord Shiva, a great hero was born from the womb of Shahajiraj Bhonsle’s maternal uncle – none other than Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who lit the fire of Swarajya (self-rule) to save the country from the tyrannical rule of Aurangzeb and founded the Maratha Empire.

Shivaji Maharaj’s fight was not against any religion, but against oppression and injustice. Aurangzeb, who feared his growing power, launched many attacks against Swarajya, but always lost. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the Lion of the Deccan, was the only one who could challenge Aurangzeb’s ruthless empire.

However, when the news of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s death reached Aurangzeb, he dreamed of bringing the whole of Hindustan under the Mughal flag. But, Shivaji’s son, Sambhaji Maharaj (also known as Shambhu) dashed that dream. He captured the city of Burhanpur and turned the Mughal celebrations into mourning. Sambhaji carried forward his father’s dream of Swaraj and fought for a land where all religions could live in peace, respecting it.

To curb Sambhaji’s power, Aurangzeb invaded the Deccan with a huge army. The Mughal army brought destruction and death wherever it moved. But, the Marathas also used their terrain advantage, making unexpected attacks through mountain passes and dense forests.

However, due to treachery, Sambhaji Maharaj fell into the hands of the Mughals. Even when brought before Aurangzeb, Sambhaji remained steadfast. He was subjected to severe tortures – his nails were pulled out, his eyes gouged out, his tongue cut out – but he never betrayed his faith or his vision of Swaraj. Finally, he was executed on 11 March 1689.

Sambhaji’s death did not discourage the Marathas. His statement that a new Shivaji and a new Sambhaji would arise in every Maratha house after his death came true. The Maratha battle continued, and Aurangzeb could never achieve complete victory. The flame of Swaraj lit by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj did not go out.
