Written and directed by veteran British director Andrea Arnold, “Bird” is a 2024 film that has received special attention in the film world. Starring Nikea Adams, Barry Keoghan, and Franz Rogowski, the film premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival.

Plot
Twelve-year-old Bailey lives in a dilapidated building with his father, Bug, and brother Hunter. One day, Bug announces his engagement to a woman named Kelly. He has known her for three months and their wedding is scheduled for the following Saturday. Shocked by this news, Bailey leaves the wedding angrily, saying that he will not attend.

Later that day, Hunter tells Bailey that he is a member of a vigilante group with his friends. Curious, Bailey follows them and sees the group of men break into a house and threaten a man with a cutting box. When the police are called, Bailey flees to an empty field and spends the night there.

The next morning, she is greeted by a mysterious man who calls himself “Bird.” He is looking for a woman who used to live in an apartment building, but she cannot be found. As Bailey leaves, she finds Bird on the roof of the building. Bug comes and takes her home to punish her for not coming home all night.

Bailey learns that Bird was looking for his mother, who disappeared when he was a child. Bailey, feeling sorry for Bird, suggests that her mother, who used to live in the apartment building, can help Peyton.

At Peyton’s house, Bailey and Bird inquire about the residents, but are interrupted by the attitude of Peyton’s partner, Skate. Bailey and Skate are having a verbal altercation, and Skate threatens to kill Peyton if she shows it to the authorities. However, Peyton remembers Bird’s father’s name. Bailey sends the video to Hunter, who promises that he and the team will beat up Skate and save her mother and siblings.

Later, Hunter enlists Bailey’s help in delivering a letter to his girlfriend, Moon. Moon’s pregnancy has drawn the ire of her family, so the two plan to flee to Scotland. During the journey, a raven follows Bailey and helps her to avoid Moon’s family and deliver the letter.

The next day, while Hunter and his friends plan the attack, Bailey goes out on a date with her siblings. Bird returns and helps Bailey and the children get to the beach, where he goes to find his father. When they find his house, the man there denies that Bird and Bailey ever had a son. He then retracts his denial and tells Bird that he was with Bird’s mother, and that they had a son, but left because of her mental state. Bailey comforts a tearful Bird.

As soon as they return, Skate tries to break into the house. Peyton is unable to stop him and he attacks her. Bailey tries to stop him, but Skate hits her, knocking her unconscious. Bird returns and tries to protect Peyton, but Skate hits him in the head as well. Upon regaining consciousness, Bailey sees Bird transform into a creature with feathers, large wings, and bird eyes. He fights Skate again, this time taking him outside, knocking him unconscious, grabbing his body with his claws, and flying away.

The next morning, Bailey learns that Hunter has left the house. She informs Bugs, and the two run to the train station, where they find Hunter alone. Moon is devastated because he didn’t agree to the plans. Bug comforts Hunter, telling him that he is too young for parenthood. The three return home and attend Bug and Caylee’s wedding, with Bailey more than happy about the ceremony. During the party, Bird suddenly appears and hugs Bailey goodbye. As he leaves, it is revealed that Bailey’s eyes have become bird eyes, just like Bird’s.

The film subtly portrays various human relationships. The violent relationship between Peyton and her partner, Skate, the romance between Hunter and Moon, and the growing friendship between Bailey and Bird add a deeper dimension to the story.

Social Issues
The film touches on several deep social issues:

The concepts of family relationships and marriage
Teen pregnancy and its consequences
Domestic violence and its effects
The exploration of identity in the young generation
Technical Excellence
The film’s special visual imagery, especially Bird’s transformation scenes, is created at a very high technical level. The cinematography perfectly highlights the dark and mysterious nature of the film.

Acting skills
Nikea Adams brings the character of Bailey to life with great sensitivity. The character of Bird, played by Barry Keoghan, is mysterious and kind-hearted. The supporting cast also does justice to their characters.

Critical response and awards
The film was praised by critics, and was named one of the ten best independent films of 2024 by the National Board of Review. After its screening at Cannes, MUBI released it in the UK and US.

Conclusion
“Bird” is not just another film. It is a complex story about human relationships, the search for identity, and self-discovery. Director Andrea Arnold has managed to transcend traditional cinematic language and take cinema to a new dimension.

The film’s deep understanding of social issues and human relationships lingers with the viewer for a long time. It can be considered a work of artistic value while breaking the boundaries of traditional cinema.
