The Birth of Led Zeppelin: The Beginning of a Musical Legend
For a group of young men in England who had grown up in the dark shadows of World War II, the sound of rock and roll coming across the Atlantic from America was like a voice from another world. After generations of parents and ancestors who had experienced two world wars, living among the buildings of war-torn London and under rationing, there was a new hope for the future. Against this backdrop, the dreams of young men like Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham revolved around American music.
Inspired by musicians like Lonnie Donegan and influenced by American blues and R&B, these young men began their musical journeys. Jimmy Page developed an inseparable bond with the guitar, even trying to play it at school. His mother was a great supporter of his musical journey. John Paul Jones came from a musical family and was exposed to various musical instruments from an early age. He chose the bass guitar over his father’s objections and also worked as a church organist.
Robert Plant, while studying to become a chartered accountant, was fascinated by the music of artists such as Little Richard and pursued his dream of becoming a singer. John Bonham loved playing drums from a young age and was inspired by artists such as Gene Krupa. Although he worked in the building industry with his father, music took center stage in his life.
Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones became popular session musicians in London. They played on hits such as Goldfinger and worked with bands such as the Rolling Stones, the Kings, and the Who. Page decided to break away from the session world and make his own music, and joined the Yardbirds with Jeff Beck. After Jeff Beck left, Page took over as the band’s leader.
Although the Yardbirds were successful in America, they were not well received in England. Page, who was reluctant to record commercial hits, planned to focus on albums. After the Yardbirds disbanded, Page decided to form his own band. He needed a strong vocalist. After failing to find Terry Reed, he found Robert Plant.
Plant and Page had an immediate musical bond. Plant suggested John Bonham as the drummer. Although initially reluctant, Bonham later agreed. John Paul Jones, at the urging of his wife, joined Page.
On August 12, 1968, the four of them played together for the first time in a small room in London. The song ‘Train Kept A-Rollin” was played, and the room exploded. The instant chemistry was a life-changing experience. They began rehearsing at Page’s house in Pangbourne.
After a tour of Scandinavia as the Yardbirds, the group was named ‘Led Zeppelin’ at the suggestion of Keith Moon. Their first album was recorded at Olympic Studios. Jimmy Page served as producer and Glyn Jones as engineer. The album was recorded live. Page used techniques such as microphone placement and backward echo to create a distinctive sound.
The album was first released in America. Under the management of Peter Grant, they embarked on an American tour. Initially supporting Vanilla Fudge, they quickly became a major attraction. Their music spread through FM radio, and their concerts were filled to capacity.
The album Led Zeppelin II was recorded in various studios during their American tours. The album further demonstrated the diversity, power, and creativity of their music.
Their performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London on January 9, 1970, marked the culmination of their incredible year-long journey. Despite criticism from the press, the audience embraced them, and Led Zeppelin set out to make an indelible mark on world music. It was a perfect example of how dreams can be achieved by believing in one’s own abilities, working hard, and achieving one’s goals.
