The first season of the “Andor” series takes place five years before the events of Rogue One. It follows Cassian Andor, a lowly thief and middleman who becomes a rebel. The season can be divided into three main parts, each of which contributes to Cassian’s transformation and the formation of the rebel alliance.
Beginning: Morlana One and Ferrix
The story begins with Cassian accidentally killing a Pre-Mor Authority security officer while traveling to Morlana One in search of his missing sister. He kills another officer to cover up his actions, which brings him to the attention of Syril Karn, a passionate Pre-Mor investigator. Cassian flees to his adopted home of Ferix. Here he finds a merchant named Bix Caleen and a trusted droid named B2EMO. Bix finds a buyer for an Imperial Starpath Unit that Cassian stole. The buyer is a secret Rebel operative named Luthen Rael. Cyril’s relentless investigations lead to the arrival of Pri-Mor forces on Ferix, at which point Luthen offers Cassian the chance to leave Ferix and join a Rebel cell. Cassian, who is about to be arrested, reluctantly agrees.
The Aldhani Raid
Cassian is brought to Aldhani, where a unique astronomical phenomenon known as “The Eye” occurs. Here, he joins a small rebel group led by Luthan’s cousin, Vel Sartha. Their mission is to steal a large batch of pay from a high-security Imperial base during the Aldhani I festival. Although the heist is successful, it comes at a high price. Several rebels are killed, and a young rebel, Nemik, is seriously injured. His final words and the brutality of the Empire’s response force Cassian to realize the true significance of the rebellion.
Narkina 5 and the Ferix Rebellion
After the Aldhani heist, Cassian attempts to hide on the resort planet Niamos, but is unjustly arrested by Imperial forces and sentenced to six years in a brutal Imperial prison factory on Narkina 5. Here, he and other prisoners are forced to build parts for the Death Star. During Narkina 5, Cassian experiences the Empire’s brutality firsthand. He forms an alliance with the prison warden, Kino Loy. Together, the two lead a daring prison break, successfully escaping after hundreds of prisoners rebel and escape.
Meanwhile, on Ferix, Maarva’s health deteriorates. The Imperial Security Bureau (ISB), led by the determined Dedra Meero, increases pressure by linking the Aldhani raid to Ferix. The Dedra, with the help of Cyril Kahn, focuses on capturing Cassian and eradicating the rebellion. Bix is captured and brutally tortured by Daedra for information about Cassian and Luthan.
Marva dies, and her funeral becomes a focal point of the simmering resentment in Ferix. Daedra and Cyril see it as an opportunity to trap Cassian. However, Marva’s posthumous recorded message is a powerful call to rise up against the Empire, which ignites a full-scale rebellion among the people of Ferix during her funeral procession.
Amidst this chaos, Cassian returns to Ferix to rescue Bix and help his friends. He navigates the escalating conflict, rescuing Bix from Imperial custody, and helping several of his Ferix friends escape. The story ends with Cassian meeting Luthan and offering himself up to the rebellion. He realizes the need for a true resistance to the Empire. In the final scene, the parts built on Narkina 5 are revealed to be parts of the Death Star’s superlaser, adding a harsh reality to Cassian’s unwitting contribution to his own future destruction.
The season also features the political work of Senator Mon Mothma of Coruscant. She secretly funds the rising rebellion amidst the perils of Imperial politics, making difficult personal sacrifices, such as her daughter’s marriage, to maintain her secrecy and secure the funds.
The first season of “Andor” is a realistic, gritty, and morally complex exploration of how a rebellion is born from the pressures of an authoritarian regime. It focuses on ordinary people whose lives are changed under the Empire’s iron fist, and shows how a reluctant hero like Cassian Andor finds his purpose in the fight for freedom.
