“Adolescence” is a four-part British psychological crime drama series created by Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham and directed by Philip Barantini. The series was created in response to the rising incidence of knife crime and violence among young people in the United Kingdom, and explores the impact of figures such as Andrew Tate and the online “manosphere” (toxic male-dominated groups) on adolescent boys. The series is notable for being presented in a single, continuous camera shot (one-shot style), which brings the real-time and emotional nature of the events closer to the audience.

The story begins when the police raid the home of 13-year-old Jamie Miller, who lives in an ordinary English town, and arrest him on charges of murdering his classmate Katie Leonard. The Miller family – father Eddie, mother Manda and sister Lisa – are shocked by this sudden incident. Jamie, who cries and claims he is innocent, is taken to the police station, and his father Eddie, as the “appropriate adult” according to the law, participates in Jamie’s interrogation. When Eddie secretly asks his son the truth, Jamie claims he has done nothing wrong, and Eddie believes him.

The investigating detective, DI Luke Bascombe, and his assistant, DS Misha Frank, begin questioning Jamie. The investigation takes a different turn when it is revealed that Jamie has been making sexually suggestive comments about female models on social media. He is then questioned about the murder of Katie Leonard. The investigation also leads to the school, where it is revealed that Jamie is involved in the incel culture (a group of people who hate women because they are rejected by them) and has been subjected to severe cyberbullying through social media. Detective Bascom’s own son, Adam, reveals that Katie has been directing this bullying by using specific emojis and branding Jamie as an ‘incel’ on Instagram. These findings provide clues to the hatred and pressure that was placed on Jamie. As the story unfolds, Jamie’s friend Ryan reveals that the knife used in the murder is his and he is also arrested on charges of conspiracy. Finally, Jamie shows him CCTV footage of Katie attacking and stabbing him.

Seven months after the murder, forensic psychologist Dr. Briony Ariston visits Jamie in the youth detention centre where he is being held to prepare a report on his mental state before his trial. Jamie appears emotionally unstable, angry and even controlling, even to the psychologist. Although he still denies the crime, Briony’s careful questioning gradually reveals the reasons for his actions. After nude photos of Katie were circulated around the school, Jamie had proposed to her, thinking she was “weak”. But it is clear that he committed this heinous crime under the influence of the anger caused by his rejection or ridicule, and the distorted patriarchal ideologies he had learned from the internet.

Finally, Jamie decides to plead guilty. This can be interpreted as a form of remorse or an admission of guilt. His parents regret that they were unable to monitor Jamie’s isolation, internet use, and changes. In particular, they both recall an incident when Jamie was being bullied while playing football as a child, and his father, Eddie, did not look at him. This is a hint at the broken relationship between father and son.

“Adolescence” is a must-watch series that powerfully discusses the complex issues faced by adolescents, the impact of the dark side of the internet, the importance of family relationships, and the consequences of violence.
