The Story of Afghan Dreamers
This story is about the unwavering effort, courage and overcoming dreams of a group of young women in Afghanistan. The moment Roya Mahboob first touched a computer, she says, it was a light in the darkness. For her and her sister Elaha, the Internet was a medium that enlarged the world through photos, books and videos. It opened up a way to share knowledge, ideas and learn what men had hidden from them. Although girls did not have freedom in life, they were freed on the computer screen.
Roya and Elaha started computer classes for girls in the cities of Herat and Kabul. They believed that knowledge is power and that computer literacy is the language of the 21st century. But it was not easy for girls to get permission to use computers. Even starting a computer class in schools had to overcome huge obstacles.
Samir, an American technology executive, encouraged Roya to become an entrepreneur. Realizing that computer classes alone were not enough, Roya had a big dream to show the world what Afghan girls can do: create an all-girl robotics team that would compete in international competitions.
The idea initially faced many obstacles. Financial problems, social opposition, and security threats (they were even shot at). Obtaining permission from parents and elders was a daunting task. But with Roya’s unwavering efforts and the support of some fathers (especially Tara’s father, who provided his garage as a workspace), the team was formed.
Even getting the robotics kit cleared through customs was a challenge. It was not easy to build the robot and learn how to operate it in a limited time. Although many were initially denied visas to travel to Washington, they were eventually granted permission after international media and public pressure. At the last minute, there was a problem with the plane’s seating, but other passengers offered theirs.
In Washington, they won a special silver medal for their courage, despite competing with limited training. Back in Afghanistan, they faced threats and social pressure. But the girls were undeterred. Their goal was to keep fighting.
Next, they prepared for an invention competition in Albuquerque. This time, their creation was a landmine-detecting robot that could be made from old car parts. Again, challenges arose; the robot had been damaged in transit. But with the help of local mechanics, they were able to repair it. Esin, a member, put aside her shyness and successfully presented the team’s invention to the judges.
In the end, Afghan dreamers won the gold medal at the Albuquerque competition for their dedication, talent, and world-class design. This is the story of their dreams coming true.
