Noise (2024) Sinhala Subtitles
Released in 2024, “Noise” is another excellent psychological thriller that has joined the ranks of South Korean cinema. Director Kim Soo-jin’s film takes the audience into an abyss of fear through themes of urban isolation, the complexity of neighborhood relationships, and the echoes of past traumas. The performances of actors such as Lee Sun-bin, Kim Min-seok, and Ryu Kyung-soo have been a good support for its success.
The story of the film revolves around Joo-yong (Lee Sun-bin) and her sister Joo-hee. The two of them start a new life in an old apartment complex, fulfilling their dream of owning their own home. But their happiness does not last long. In the middle of the night, a mysterious, unpleasant sound begins to be heard from the upper floors of their house. This sound, which sounds like something dragging on the ground, like heavy footsteps, has a serious impact on Joo-hee’s mental health.
One of the highlights of the story is that the main character, Joo-young, suffers from hearing loss. She cannot hear anything clearly without a hearing aid. Because of this, she is initially unable to properly understand the pressure her sister is going through. One day, Joo-young comes home from work to find her sister missing. With no proper help even from the police, she has to start a fight alone to find her sister’s fate.
During this search, she meets Joo-hee’s boyfriend, Ki-hoon (Kim Min-seok). He also assists Joo-young in her investigation. As the two of them question the neighbors together, many dark secrets in the apartment complex begin to be revealed. In particular, the mysterious person (Ryu Kyung-soo) who lives downstairs from their house constantly threatens Joo-young, saying that the noise coming from her house is a nuisance to him. However, the fact that Joo-young hears the noise even when he is not at home adds to the mystery of the story.
“Noise” is not just a ghost movie. It also explores how people living in apartments are distant from each other and how social problems such as “floor-noise” have affected Korean society. With sound as a main theme, this film manages to turn even silence into a frightening experience. The silence that the audience also feels when Joo-young takes off his hearing aids intensifies the mystery of the film.
In the end, Joo-young discovers the truth about the mysterious noise and his sister’s disappearance. The revelation that it is more than just a supernatural event, but a tragedy involving human activity and psychological trauma, will undoubtedly shock the audience. “Noise” is a must-see film that oscillates between sound and silence, drawing out the deepest fears of the human mind.
