The truth behind the Sabarmati Express train fire
It is said that only rebels can change history. But I walked the path of intellectuals and rebels.
The 2002 Godhra railway station fire in Gujarat, which killed 59 people, was a turning point in India’s political history.
As a Hindi journalist named Samar Kumar, I decided to find out the truth about the incident five years later. While working for EBT News, I came across new details about the incident.
When the Sabarmati Express train from Ayodhya stopped at Godhra station, a pre-planned conspiracy was hatched. Two coaches of the train were set on fire in a premeditated manner, pretending to be a clash between passengers and tea vendors.
EBT tried to cover up the incident as an accident, but with the help of a young journalist named Amita Gill, I was able to uncover the truth.
After examining witness statements, police reports and court documents, it was revealed that this was a planned attack led by a religious leader named Habib Qadri.
The attack, which used 140 litres of petrol, killed 59 people, including women and children, and justice has yet to be served for their deaths.
I brought this truth to light 15 years later in 2017, which was a major turning point in the Indian media landscape. This incident shows that while the truth can be hidden, it cannot be hidden forever.
This incident proves that “you can try to hide the truth, but you cannot hide it forever.” Justice must be served for the deaths of the 59 people who died in the Sabarmati train fire, and their names must be forever etched in history.
