The Story of People Who Jumped Into the Mud: The Journey of Beautiful Photography

Ninth Mandala is a unique place, tucked away in the bustling streets of London. It is run by a young photographer named Piya Jaswani. She has struggled all her life, chasing her dreams, and finding her way through the ups and downs of life.

Piya is different from those around her. Her needs, hopes, and dreams are different from those of her family. Her sister Sonal is getting married, and her father is building his photography studio. “I don’t want to get married, I don’t want to have children,” she tells the family, but her mother and sister refuse to accept the idea.

Piya’s love for photography is deep. “Taking a photograph is about capturing beauty,” she says. “It’s about capturing light directly from the sky. When I take a photograph, I want to capture the light of the person in front of the lens. I can’t take anything, I’m not mine. It’s something that can’t be done without both of us being there—like a conversation or a relationship.”

But Pita’s life is not simple. Her studio is in financial trouble, and as her sister Sonal prepares for her wedding, family pressure also weighs on her. An astrologer named Pandit Rumprakash (known as Fugaji) reads Pita’s birth chart (janampatri) and predicts that one of the next five people will be her life partner.

According to this prediction, Pita’s mother, sister and father plan the perfect thing for Pita. Her life partner is beyond her by one of the first five dates she meets. The first relationship fails, with a billionaire named Sid, who begs her father not only as a business partner but also as a ‘nominal’ partner in marriage. The second date, with a young man named Akshay, proves to be in love with her father’s mother. The third date, with Milo (Dr. Yogi), a man with no common sense who believes the Earth is flat.

As each relationship fails, her father’s friend Jay takes her out on a fourth date. The two talk over lipstick and pizza, and Jay encourages her father. “You’ve had enough people telling you who you are and what you should be,” he tells her. “Your mother and sister will understand eventually. Until then, you’ll always have me.”

In the midst of all this, her first love, Charlie, returns to her life. He is now a best man at Sonal’s wedding. They fell in love as teenagers, but their paths diverged when her father went to London for his graduation. When they meet again, feelings that had been suppressed for years resurface.

Her father and Charlie team up to create a special photo album for her sister’s wedding. But the tension between them is still there, and their conversations are interrupted. At Sonal’s mehndi (henna) ceremony, the tension escalates and her father blocks her and her sister from getting married.

Amidst all these problems, her father’s studio is in danger of being closed. But in an unexpected twist, a video of her giving a talk about photography to a group of children is posted on social media. Within minutes, she becomes an internet sensation, and the studio is packed with people.

Before the wedding, her father has a real conversation with his mother. Her mother changes her stance, admitting that “marriage is not for everyone,” and gives her father the family jewels to invest in her studio. Her father attends Sonal’s wedding to try to mend their broken relationship.

At the wedding, her father has a real conversation with Charlie. The two talk about their past misunderstandings, and Charlie reveals his true feelings: “I’ll never be without you, father.”

At the end of the wedding, her father asks Charlie if he would like to come with her. He replies, “I would love to.” Eventually, her father reconnects with her first love, Charlie, on the fifth date of her life, fulfilling Fugaji’s prediction.

Eventually, her father runs the studio successfully and she is now even featured in The Sunday Times Magazine with her photos. Her father eventually reconnects with his family and Charlie. “Taking a photograph is about capturing a moment in time and living it forever,” she says. She truly carries on her grandmother’s legacy.

Her journey of becoming herself, her personal struggles with love and relationships, her conflicts and eventual peace, and her father’s courage to follow his dreams are told through her work. Like her studio, her life, like photography, is an art form that captures the true, authentic moment of life.

Set in London, the story is about self-will, traditional influences, safe choices, and the search for love and self-confidence, and ultimately, the father finds answers to his questions by learning about himself and reconnecting with those he loves. Her journey in the studio is not just an aesthetic journey, but also a journey of finding one’s own path, building trust, and finding true love.
