Alice returned to the house after years of silence. Her mother’s death had dragged her back, reluctantly, to her painful childhood. The distant, isolated house had never felt like “home” to her. It was a fortress of her mother’s control.
Alice sensed a difference the moment she entered. Cold, electric eyes were fixed throughout the house. Surveillance cameras were installed in every room, in every dark corner, their red lights constantly watching her. Why had her mother lived in such fear before her death?
She went to her mother’s room. It was filled with haunting memories of her childhood. Beauty pageant trophies, old photographs hanging on the walls, and several large mirrors. Her mother had an obsession with her image; Her efforts to make Alice a perfect doll had broken Alice’s spirit.
Several days passed. Alice was unpacking her mother’s belongings. But she constantly felt that she was not alone. In addition to the camera eyes, she felt that “someone else” was watching her, scrutinizing her every move.
One night, she heard a strange sound. It sounded like the sound of a crawling animal. She looked at the monitors. On one of the cameras, she saw a shadow, like a deformed human figure, crawling along the floor along the dark corridor. Her heart pounded with fear.
She tried to leave the house. But her car keys were missing. The gates were locked. She was a prisoner in this technological fortress.
Fear and loneliness began to cloud Alice’s mind. She began to watch old videotapes from her childhood. They were the words of her mother’s cruelty. “You have to be beautiful… you have to be perfect…” her mother’s voice echoed in the recordings.
But one videotape was different. It was not a beauty pageant, but a secretly recorded scene. In it, her mother was seen with another little girl. The girl had terrible scars all over her face. The mother scolded the girl severely and locked her in a room.
“There is only one ‘one’ we can have,” her mother heard. “Only the beautiful one.”
Alice understood everything at once. She had a twin sister. Her mother, obsessed with her figure, had hidden the “ugly” child from the world and locked her in this house. The “Other” who had grown up within these walls for years, never loved, and deformed, was now the true heiress of the house.
She was the one who killed her mother. Now she was looking at Alice.
Alice looked at the monitor. The shadow was now standing right in front of her room’s doorway. The door slowly opened. Through the camera lens, through the darkness, she saw a distorted, hateful version of her own face.
