Laddoo Army: Forgotten Heroes of the Boshin War

So… are you Spider-Man? No, this action drama is about the forgotten heroes of Japan’s Keio 4th year. It tells the story of a group of warriors called the “Laddoo Army” set against the backdrop of Japan’s Boshin War.

Wartime

In Keio 4th year, at a time when the samurai era was coming to an end, Japan faced the Boshin War. The new government, led by the Satsuma and Choshu regions, supported the imperial court, while the former Tokugawa shogunate was forced to abdicate. In the midst of this struggle, the Shibata region, a small domain in Echigo, faced the question of whether to side with the Northern Alliance or the imperial army.

Laddu Army

The chief of Shibata Prefecture formed a special fighting group of ten criminals. Although these criminals had been sentenced to death, he promised them amnesty if they fought for Shibata Prefecture. The group included:

  • A murderer
  • An arsonist
  • A survivor of a mass family suicide
  • A samurai assassin
  • A monk who committed sexual abuse
  • A notorious fraud
  • A hangman

This Laddu Army was sent to fight under the Nagaoka flag to defend Shibata Castle. However, this promise of amnesty was only a deception. In reality, Shibata planned to kill these criminals after they had finished their work.

Double Act

Although the Shibata region secretly planned to join forces with the Imperial Army, they pretended to be a Northern Allied army sent to the Alliance. They were only buying time until the Imperial Army arrived. Due to this double act, while the Laddu army was fighting the Imperial Army, they unknowingly cut the ground for Shibata from below.

Final Battle

At the climax of the story, the Laddu army realizes that they have been deceived. But although they are not fighting for Shibata, they are fighting to protect their own honor and lives. Although some people die, they manage to find an oil well, which they use as a tool to launch a major attack against the Imperial Army.

Unfortunately, many of the Laddu members eventually die, and the Shibata region beheads them and offers them to the Imperial Army, proving their loyalty to it.

Heroism and Betrayal

Throughout the story, the Laddu army shifts its focus from individual ambitions to higher ideals of brotherhood, honor, and heroism. They are treated as human beings, even in difficult times, and are still responsible for their actions and decisions.

Meanwhile, the leader of the Shibata region protects its sovereignty and people, but he has to pay a very high price for it. The end result of his double dealings and betrayals of trust is that his own daughter commits suicide while she is still pregnant, after her samurai lover, Iri, is killed in battle.

Transformation of the Nation

The story depicts the broader transformation of Japan – the end of the samurai era and the beginning of the new Japanese era. It shows how the old samurai values of honor, dedication, and patriotism clash with a new world based on survival, power, conquest, and practicality.

Even “vile” criminals like the Laddu Army fought to protect their honor and humanity, while the “honorable” samurai acted cunningly, breaking their word. This contrast raises complex questions about identity, honor, and human nature.

Hopes in a Broken World

Although the story ends in violence and death, it also has its moments of light. Some Laddu members survive, vowing to keep the memory of their fallen comrades alive. Noro and Oroshia are among the survivors, with some hope for moving on with their lives.

Overall, this story makes us think about the challenges and importance of maintaining personal honor, brotherhood, and humanity in times of transformation.

Laddu Army is a story about the forgotten heroes of the Boshin War, and how human dignity can ultimately be the greatest weapon in war for those willing to sacrifice their own lives.
